The 1999 Denny C. Plattner Appalachian Heritage Awards Each year since 1993, the authors of the best poems, short stories and essays or articles published in Appalachian Heritage have received the Denny C. Plattner Awards for excellence in writing. This year, firstplace winners in each genre are awarded two hundred dollars. In addition, first, second and third-place winners receive personalized, solid cherry book racks. We at Appalachian Heritage are grateful for the generosity of the Plattner family, who make possible these awards for excellence among our contributors, in memory of one who loved the written word and labored at the craft. The Denny C. Plattner Awards were established by Kenneth and Elissa May Plattner, of Camp Spring, Kentucky, in honor of their deceased son and his deep appreciation for writers and writing. Denny's brother, Andy S. Plattner, is a professional writer living in Athens, Georgia. He coordinated the panel for the 1999 awards.
