Replicating Single-Subject Assessment of Language in Deaf Elementary-Age Children

Many teachers of hearing-impaired students are beginning to accept each hearing-impaired student's right to demonstrate which language and/or system (L/S) is most beneficial to that child in learning academic material. In an earlier study, methodology allowing for such a systematically assessed determination was developed by the author (Luetke-Stahlman, 1982b). In the present study, it was replicated with elementary-aged students. Assessment results were further compared to an American Sign Language Ability Rating and a language-base score. These procedures seem of value to educators who wish to match the language of instruction to the L/S functioning as a first language for individual hearing-impaired students in their classroom.
