Decisions regarding pupil placement or selection of printed materials for deaf students are often based on students' performance on commercially prepared informal reading inventories (IRIs) that have been developed for hearing students. This article presents guidelines for selecting and modifying commercially prepared IRIs to maximize their effectiveness with deaf students.
