Abstract

This paper addresses itself to the uses of the portable videotape recorder and the portable teletypewriter as resources for teaching English to deaf students. The paper discusses the language skills of deaf students who have not developed native speaker competence in either English or a conventional sign language. The paper briefly describes the language abilities the students utilize to signal semantic relationships and shows how the VTR and TTY can be employed to bridge the gap between the semantic intent of the students' communication and standard English syntax. Additional benefits the TTY can provide the students and community are also included.
