Mission

Advertising & Society Review is the first scholarly journal devoted entirely to advertising and its relationship to society, culture, history, and the economy. It is published quarterly in electronic form and distributed through Project Muse of The Johns Hopkins University Press.

Advertising & Society Review publishes articles, essays, interviews, roundtable discussions, and other forms of scholarship relevant to a broad, interdisciplinary audience. The journal is peer reviewed and managed by an Editorial Board consisting of scholars and representatives of the advertising industry.

Advertising & Society Review is unique among electronic journals in the degree to which the subject matter and the Internet interact to create a scholarly publication that greatly surpasses the potential of conventional print publications. The online format allows flexibility in including full-color illustrations, streamed commercials, and hyperlinks to accompany each piece. Readers are no longer asked to imagine full-color versions of print advertisements or the movement, action, sound, and color in television commercials as they are in conventional print discussions of advertisements. Instead, the Internet provides wide leeway in illustrating each piece and few limits on length and format.

Another innovation for this journal is its agreements with SAG [Screen Actors Guild] and AFTRA [American Federation of Television and Radio Artists], which have generously granted Advertising & Society Review permission to reproduce television commercials that accompany articles and essays in this journal. This bypasses the necessity for an author who publishes here to seek permission when he or she would like to reproduce an advertisement for the purposes of scholarly commentary. Thus, A&SR is easily able to assure authors that their submissions, if accepted, will be published with high quality images that mirror as closely as possible the original sources.

The journal is published by The Advertising Educational Foundation, Inc. The AEF has for many years arranged visits of industry representatives on college campuses and sponsored internships of professors in advertising agencies and client companies as ways of promoting a fuller understanding of advertising in American colleges and universities. In underwriting the editorial costs of producing Advertising & Society Review, the AEF has broadened ways in which it seeks to foster this understanding.

It is important to note, however, that A&SR is editorially independent of its sponsor and the advertising industry. It follows all the usual standards of a top quality journal. Every original article is subjected to peer review. Only those that meet rigorous standards of peer review and contribute in an important way to scholarly knowledge about advertising and its context are published here.

The Editorial Board of this journal actively participates in decisions about the merits of each article or essay. The Board consists of about 20 scholars and 3 to 5 representatives of the advertising industry. Each scholar is uniquely qualified because of his or her previous scholarship and teaching about advertising. Together, the scholars on the Board constitute the most able and highly qualified panel to make editorial decisions. The industry representatives who join with the scholars help provide scholarly access to agencies, production companies, and client companies and provide their expertise in insuring the factual correctness of each contribution.

Scholars are always able to access A&SR through the website of The Advertising Educational Foundation at www.aef.com. Most American colleges and universities also provide access through library subscriptions to Advertising & Society Review. The journal is also available through Project Muse of The Johns Hopkins University Press.

ADText is authored by Professor William M. O'Barr, Ph.D. Professor O'Barr (mack@duke.edu) is a cultural anthropologist who specializes in advertising and its relation to society, culture and history. He is author of Culture and the Ad: Exploring Otherness in the World of Advertising (1994). He is also founding editor of the online journal, Advertising & Society Review.
