41 Department of Corrections Harsh, yes, but it is for their own good, a refinement of how they see the world, correcting distortions that are inevitable with lapses of grammar and syntax. We cannot make them smarter but we can work to diminish their disabilities. No longer do we send them to the galleys, even for grievous errors that affront God’s own creation, but there is no way for them to be paroled, the words they’d use not having any fixed meaning, and their phrases ambiguous, even to themselves.
