T he G uerrilla G irls Speakeasy March 1986 Each month the New Art Examiner invites a well-known, or not-so-well-known, art world personality to write a “Speakeasy” essay on a topic of interest—whatever it may be. Here we reprint a missive sent to us by The Guerrilla Girls, a New York-based organization dedicated to fighting art world sexism. GUERRILLA GIRL #1 I’M A GUERRILLA GIRL AND I’M NOT ANGRY. WHY SHOULD I BE ANGRY THAT ONLY ONE MAJOR NEW YORK CITY MUSEUM HAD AN EXHIBITION BY A WOMAN ARTIST LAST YEAR? GUERRILLA GIRL #2 I’M A GUERRILLA GIRL AND I’M NOT ANGRY. WHY SHOULD I WASTE MY TIME GETTING HOT AND BOTHERED ABOUT THE FACT THAT SO MANY MAJOR NEW YORK GALLERIES SHOW LESS THAN 10% WOMEN? WHAT DO I CARE ABOUT BLUM HELMAN, MARY BOONE, GRACE BORGENICHT, DIANE BROWN, LEO CASTELLI , CHARLES COWLES, MARISA del RE, DIA FOUNDATION, ALLAN FRUMKIN, MARIAN GOODMAN, PAT HEARN, MARLBOROUGH , PACE, TONY SHAFRAZI, SPERONE WESTWATER, ED THORP OR WASHBURN? WHY SHOULD I BE FURIOUS THAT MOST OF THE OTHER GALLERIES DON’T DO MUCH BETTER? 192   T h e E s s e n t i a l N ew A rt E xaminer GUERRILLA GIRL #3 I’M A GUERRILLA GIRL AND I CERTAINLY DON’T THINK THERE’S ANYTHING TO GET ANGRY ABOUT. SHOULD I HATE THE MALE ARTISTS WHO ALLOW THEIR WORK TO BE SHOWN AT GALLERIES THAT SHOW HARDLY ANY WOMEN? I’M SURE THAT CLAES OLDENBURG AND BRUCE NAUMAN HAVE MADE IT CLEAR TO LEO CASTELLI THAT HE MUST SHOW MORE WOMEN. I KNOW THAT DAVID SALLE HAS OFTEN DEMANDED OF MARY BOONE THAT SHE AT LEAST TAKE ONE WOMAN ARTIST. WITH THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MALE ARTISTS ALL TELLING THEIR DEALERS TO TAKE ACTION, WHAT DO I HAVE TO BE ANGRY ABOUT? GUERRILLA GIRL #4 I’M A GUERRILLA GIRL AND I’M NOT AT ALL INCENSED THAT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART SHOWED ONLY 13 WOMEN OUT OF 169 ARTISTS IN THEIR INTERNATIONAL SURVEY OF PAINTING AND SCULPTURE. OR THAT THE CARNEGIE INTERNATIONAL HAD ONLY 4 OUT OF 42. I KNOW THESE FIGURES OCCURRED SIMPLY BY CHANCE: THERE WAS NO SEXISM—CONSCIOUS OR UNCONSCIOUS—AT WORK. GUERRILLA GIRL #5 I’M A GUERRILLA GIRL AND I’M NOT ANGRY AT THE CRITICS WHO WRITE LESS THAN 10% OF THEIR ONE-PERSON SHOW REVIEWS ABOUT WOMEN ARTISTS. I ADMIRE AND RESPECT DORE ASHTON, EDIT DeAK, THOMAS LAWSON, KIM LEVIN, GARY INDIANA , IDA PANICELLI, ROBERT PINCUS-WITTEN, PETER PLAGENS, CARTER RATCLIFF AND VALENTIN TATRANSKY AND I HOPE THEY USE THEIR 10% TO WRITE ABOUT ME THIS YEAR. GUERRILLA GIRL #6 I’M A GUERRILLA GIRL AND I’M NOT ANGRY THAT THE ART WORLD IS ADMINISTERED ENTIRELY BY MIDDLE-AGED WOMEN FOR THE BENEFIT OF VERY YOUNG MEN. AFTER ALL, WOMEN ARE ACCUSTOMED TO BEING WIVES AND MOTHERS. WE KNOW HOW TO BLOW THEIR NOSES! ...
