Acknowledgments and Permissions Highest thanks go to the contributors to this collection. They have taken considerable time and care with their essays—both those who revised their essays that appeared in the 2008 symposium on the line from Center: A Journal of the Literary Arts, and also the great many who joined this project in its present form. Thanks to Jeffrey Pethybridge for the incisive feedback and ideas he offered as the introductory essay came together, and to Roland Greene, Albert Gelpi, Nicholas Jenkins, and Robert Kaufman for their keen attention to earlier incarnations of many of the ideas that found a home in the first part of the introduction. Deep appreciation goes to Alice Fulton, Lynne McMahon, and Sherod Santos. We would like to thank Joseph Parsons, Holly Carver, Lisa Raffensperger, and their colleagues at the University of Iowa Press. Our external reader, Lisa Steinman, offered a generous reading of the manuscript and made many helpful suggestions along the way. Thanks as well to the English Department at the College of Charleston for generous financial and professional support. It is our pleasure to acknowledge a number of publishers and estates for their permission to reprint the following: “Just Walk Away Renee,” from Toxic Flora by Kimiko Hahn.
