‘Kruger’ is one of the world’s best known national parks, whose mention immediately conjures up visions of an untouched, vast landscape filled with African megafauna and other wildlife . From Kruger’s splendid elephants to the most insignificant beetles or butterflies, the sheer diversity of life in this stunning setting creates a lasting impression . At 20,000 km2 , Kruger National Park’s extent is impressive in itself, about the size of Wales and just a little smaller than Belize – but when combined with a number of private concessions and reserves to the west, the wilderness area extends to nearly 22,000 km2 . This area is known as the Greater Kruger National Park conservation area (see page 15) . The Kruger lies south and west of the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, collectively known as the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which contributes another 35,000 km2 of protected land . If future plans to expand the protected area to include the Banhine and Zinave National Parks in Mozambique come to pass, a vast conservation area of nearly 100,000 km2 will have been created . Important conservation issues remain to be resolved, particularly regarding cross-border poaching and the poisoning of vultures, but this is a region of which southern Africa can justly be proud .
