17 1/ 3/ 16/ Translation When David had taken up residence in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, "12 am dwelling in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under tent curtains ." 2/ Nathan replied to David, "Do3 everything your heart desires for God4is with you." That night the word of God came to Nathan, saying: 4/ " Go say to David my servant: Thus says Yahweh: You are not the one to build5for me the house6to dwell in.7 5/ For I have not dwelled in a house from the time when I brought Israel up8 until this day, but I have traveled about9from tent to tent and from tabernacle to tabernacle.10 6/ Wherever I have moved about in alllsrael,11 did I ever speak a word with one of the judges1 2 of Israel, whom I appointed13 to shepherd my people, saying, 'Why have you not built for me a house of cedar?' 7/ Now, thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says Yahweh of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be ruler14 over my people lsrael.15 8/ I have been with you wherever you went, and I have cut off all your enemies before you, and I will make for you a name16 like the name of the great ones who are in the earth. 9/ I will make a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them so that they may dwell in their own place, and not be disturbed anymore, nor shall wicked people continue to wear them out11 as they did formerly, 10/ from the time18 I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will subdue all your19 enemies. I declare20 to you that21 Yahweh will build22 for you a house. 11/ When23 your days are complete24to go to be25with your ancestors, I will raise up your seed after you, who will be from your sons/6and I will establish his kingdom. 12/ He will build for me a house and I will establish his throne27 forever. 13/ I will be to him a father, and he will be for me a son. I will not remove28 my loyalty from him, as I removed it from the one who was before you.29 14/ I will install him in my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne30 will be established forever." 15/ According to all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. King David went and sat before Yahweh, and he said, " Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me to this place? 17/ And this31is a small thing in your eyes, God, for you have also spoken of your servant's house in a distant time, and you have let me look upon the generation of humankind to come,32 0 Yahweh God. 18/ What more can David add to you in order to make you honor33 your servant?34 It is you, Yahweh,35 who have known your ser17 :1-271 Promise of Dynastic Succession and Temple Building H. van den Bussche, "La texte de Ia prophetie de Nathan sur Ia dynastie davidique (II Sam. I do not believe this conclusion is warranted. I note, instead, that Chronicles, in readings discussed in textual notes 3, 4, 5, 8, 11 , 15, 16, 18, 22, 23,27-31, 33, 36, 39, 40, 42, 43, 45, and 48, presupposes a text of Samuel other than MT. I also note that in this chapter Chronicles LXX has frequently been corrected toward the text of Samuel, as discussed in notes 6, 10, 12, 17, 25, 26, 34, and 43. 2 This is the only time Chronicles uses 'Jl~. Everywhere else, some thirty times, it uses 'l~. 3 i1tDJ); cf. some Hebrew MSS and Syr of 2 Sam 7:3; Samuel MT and LXX put l? "Go" before this word. 4 D'i1'?~i1; cf. 2 Sam 7:3 LXXL.
