In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Imperial Designs completes a trilogy of books aboutWest Asia, the wider Middle East, and U.S. policy in the region. I am grateful to Potomac Books, in particular to commissioning editor Hilary Claggett and her colleagues, for making the publication possible.Their support has meant that all three volumes have the Potomac imprint. These books are my attempt to make sense of the region and explain how local and regional conflicts and foreign interventions have shaped the Middle East––a vast area in which Persian, Arabian, and Jewish civilizations live and compete. I am deeply indebted to Johan Galtung for reading an early draft of the manuscript , making suggestions, and writing the foreword to Imperial Designs. His comments were invaluable and I learned a great deal from them, but any imperfections remain my own responsibility. I am also grateful to outstanding scholars such as Mark Juergensmeyer, Hamid Dabashi, Ilan Pappe, and Evelin Lindner for their generous comments on the book.Their sage words have greatly enhanced its value. I am more grateful to Richard Falk than I can convey. Richard carefully read the drafts of Breeding Ground and Overcoming the Bush Legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan . He then wrote the foreword to the first book and a review of the second. Richard’s encouragement, guidance, and wisdom over a number of years have meant much to me. For their generous reviews of Breeding Ground, I owe much to Walter LaFeber, Howard Zinn, Shah Mahmoud Hanifi, and M. Rasgotra. Similarly, for Overcoming the Bush Legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan, my thanks go to Marjorie Cohn, Clive Stafford Smith, Ramzy Baroud, and John Tirman, who wrote the foreword. Finally, I must express my deep appreciation for my wife, who has shown endless patience and given her unstinting support over the last four years. None of this would have been possible without her.
