Lyle N. McAlister earned his doctorate in history at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1950, and has taught for many years at the University of Florida, where he is is now Distinguished Service Professor of History. He was director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Florida in the mid-1960s, and in 1972 chaired the Conference on Latin American History.
