And men and women in a million bedrooms are doing the same thing men and women have always done. And thousands of soldiers are fighting thousands of other soldiers over the same basic issues, with basically the same results. Sometimes, just to change the subject, we like to imagine a race of people on another planet out there, where conditions are pretty much the same as those we enjoy here. And this poem is for them, wherever they are: waiting in line at the diving board, strolling out of the dark matinee into the heat of the afternoon, or taking a late walk after dinner under the full moon, the dog straining so hard he’s almost choking for what lies beyond the leash. ...
