646 M Bruce MacCombie (1943–2012) USA MacCombie held degrees from the universities of Massachusetts and Iowa and did postdoctoral work with Wolfgang Fortner at the Freiburg Conservatory. He taught at several universities in New England and worked in the music industry for G. Schirmer and AMP. Gerberau Musics, for partially prepared piano, 1976 (AMP 1979) 5pp. Prologue; Continuum; Antique Invention; Viel zu ernsthaft!; Blue Epilogue. The title Gerberau Musics refers to a street in Freiburg, Germany, where the composer lived. This set of short pieces parodies different kinds of music and utilizes both normal and prepared piano sonorities. Sounds reminiscent of distant bells, unusual gongs, drums, and even gamelan music result from the careful placement of the twenty-eight preparations used. Includes table of preparations and discussion of notation. Effective. M-D. Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) USA Considered by many to be America’s first truly professional composer, MacDowell was at his best composing miniatures. His piano writing shows that he understood the best styles and idioms in late nineteenth-century writing. He left us 160 romantic character pieces that have a poetic mastery about them. Forgotten Fairy Tales Op.4 1897 (MMP). Sung outside the Prince’s Door (Alfred 2629); Of a Tailor and a Bear; Beauty in the Rose-Garden; From Dwarfland . Int. These pieces and the Op.4 set are endowed with sparkle and a charming Romantic atmosphere. Int. First Modern Suite Op.10 1880–81. Prelude (AMP; SP); Intermezzo (AMP). The other movements are: Presto; Andantino and Allegretto; Rhapsody; Fugue. Well written and interesting as an early work. M-D. Second Modern Suite Op.14 1882 (Br&H). Praeludium: contains an explanatory quotation from Byron’s Manfred. Fugato. Rhapsody. Scherzino. March. Fantastic Dance. Teresa Carreño, MacDowell’s teacher, performed this suite frequently on her tours. M-D. Serenata (Serenade) Op.16 1882 (in Nineteenth-Century American Piano Music, Dover). The outer chordal sections feature left-hand syncopation on beat 1; the midsection uses left-hand broken-chord accompaniment to support chordal melody; some arpeggiation. M-D. Four Little Poems Op.32 1887 (K). Pieces inspired by poems of Tennyson, Buliver , D. G. Rossetti, and Shelly. No.2, The Brook (in collection Essential Keyboard Repertoire, Vol. 5, Alfred 4574). Short, somewhat showy, good for small hands; fast and light figuration suggests the rippling brook. Int. Étude de Concert Op.36 1887 (in Album of American Piano Music from the Civil War through World War I, IMC 3367). A brilliant showpiece written for Teresa Carreño. It was very popular during the early twentieth century. Requires a superb octave technique. M-D to D. Marionettes Op.38 1901 (Hin; Schmidt; MMP). Eight descriptive pieces: Prologue; Soubrette; Lover; Witch; Clown; Villain; Sweetheart; Epilogue. In their original form (1888) this charming set contained only six pieces. MacDowell afterward revised them extensively, rearranged the order, and added the prologue and epilogue. He used descriptive English words rather than the usual Italian musical terms. This album comprises one of MacDowell’s most interesting portrayals of everyday human nature camouflaged in the form of marionettes. Int. Arabeske: a sparkling wrist study. In the Forest: development of rhythmic playing. Dance of the Gnomes: needs crisp articulation and perfect control of dynamics. Idyl: Lyric; charming; needs a singing tone and grace. Shadow Dance (IMC): needs agile fingers and a light touch. Intermezzo: excellent for developing independent fingers.
