xi Acknowledgements Although I have written many articles, papers, reports and memoranda for years, the writing of this story of my times and life has been an arduous task; and I would not have completed it without the assistance and encouragement of many people. I can only mention a few. Top on the list have been the latest: the editors Mary Jay, Penelope Ormerod and the publisher Mr. Walter Bgoya. They have not only made valuable comments and suggestions for improvement of the manuscript, but have encouraged me to complete it. Above all, I want to acknowledge that this work has been a joint effort by all members of my family: my wife Johara commenting on every chapter or addition as I wrote, and the children criticizing and suggesting improvements as progress was made and especially, instructing me on how to use the computer. Even the older of the grandchildren read some parts and sought clarifications tp which I responded and sometimes incorporated in the work. I am most thankful to them all. As indicated in most captions of the photos I have included, the Bank of Tanzania, the Daily News, the Information Department of the Government of Tanzania and the Archives Unit of State House proved most helpful in providing photographs of scenes I had myself lost because of the many unsettling movements I have had to undertake in my public service career. Recent snapshots of potical party campaign scenes have been generously supplied by the Tanzania Daima newspaper and others have been taken by my own children. I am obliged to all of them. Lastly I want to record my appreciation of the elucidations and explanations by several relatives, friends and acquaintances of incidents of historical significance in Tanzania, especially in Marangu, my birth-place. I cannot mention all of them; but Mwitori Petro Itosi Marealle, my late uncle Eliab Mlyingi and my brother-in-law David Marealle serve as their representatives. In conclusion, I want to state, however, that any ommissions of vital facts or their misrepresentations in this narrative, which I regret, are entirely my own responsibility. xii ...
