Preface I n writing this book, my aim has been to give an account of what it means to be a proficient reader. Proficient readers are people who can get the information that they want from a text efficiently. The topics I highlight have not been given much attention in recent reading text books. The skills needed for proficient reading have received little attention; hence, readers who have difficulty in reading and comprehension are not given extra remedial courses that could help them. This book will be useful to those involved either directly or indirectly in education. In particular, this book could help teachers, educationalists and students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions. Even though the argument about the reading process and comprehension has not been over-simplified, I have tried to ensure that the language of my presentation remains simple and clear.
