xi Acknowledgments This book has been realized with noteworthy contributions from several institutions and individuals. Among these, are public archives including: the National Archives, Buea (NAB), the Regional Archives, Bamenda (RAB) and the Saint Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary (STAMS) Archives and Library, Bambui. Further to these, l was privileged to be granted access to the rare private archives of the Foncha Family, Nicholas Ade Ngwa’s scrap book, and the personal papers of Francis Nkwatoh, John Mofor Ndi (Late), Hon Joseph Kwi, Nelson Ngayinkfu and, a priceless collection of papers from Professor Verkijika G. Fanso. In addition to these contributions I also had indepth discussions with many of these people and dozens of others acknowledged in the text. Primus Forgwe and his assistants went to great lengths in rendering me inestimable assistance at the National Archives in Buea. Above all, this work has greatly been enriched by the individual and collective, open, critical observations and discussions with the entire faculty of the Department of History, Higher Teachers’ Training College (HTTC) of The University of Bamenda (UBa) from among whom mention may be made of Professors Mathew B. Gwanfogbe and Simon N. Tata; Doctors Canute Ngwa, Nixon K. Takor, Michael K. Lang and Kingsley A. Ollong. Equally, I make special mention of my colleagues, Professor Charles Alobwed’Epie and Rev. Professor Anthony Yilaka of the Catholic University of Cameroon (CATUC), Bamenda, who did an x-ray of the manuscript, while Professor Tozoacha Asongnyi of the University of Yaoundé I has significantly enhanced the argument by his insightful contribution in the preface. Dr. Emmanuel Y. Sobseh of the Department of History, HTTC, UBa besides repeatedly and critically reading through the manuscript was part of the production process, while Dr. Walter G. Nkwi of the Department of History, University of Buea shadowed me throughout the process from conception to conclusion. I have taken the liberty to exclude persons whose names are already cited in the text.
