The Wooden Bicycle and Other Stories is a compilation of eight compelling short stories which immediately engage the reader, regardless of which story is selected for reading. Just like the author’s other collection of short stories, Cup Man and Other Stories, the book is a depiction of the joys and pains of everyday life in the typical African country or even in the West Indies. This dimension includes an in-depth look at life within the African community in the West – an experience which is, of course daunting as the immigrant struggles to adjust to the new dispensation. Azonga once again shows outstanding skill in narrative techniques by adopting a style that is at once simple and intricate, entertaining and instructive. Tikum Mbah Azonga is by profession a teacher of French and Spanish, a translator-interpreter and a journalist. He has schooled and studied and worked in Cameroon, France and England. While in London he worked as a journalist for Africa Journal and later West Africa Magazine, a Press and Public Relations Officer for London Barnet Council, and a teacher of French and Spanish in High Schools in London and Luton. The Wooden Bicycle and Other Stories is his second book of short stories to be published by Langaa, and the ninth of his books as a whole, the others being collections of poems, some in English and others in French. These include Sighs and Whispers from Within, Tomatoes for Four, A Toi Maman Cameroun, and Say No to AIDS. He has also co-authored La Bande Fumante and Gouttes d’Encre with Jean Claude Awono.
