23 The Cave Be brave Dig into the cave Fear not, it’s no grave Be scared not by its dark to crave For naked truth to disenclave Silent Voices Lions roar Dogs bark Pigs whine When danger they sense And decide to announce Their knowledge of it And scare and caution The serpent in action Pangolins roll themselves into balls Porcupines spread out their piercing quills When danger they sense And decide to act In self-defense But Giant Rats retreat into their tunnels And Snails simply withdraw Into their dry shells And decide to speak in silent voices Silent voices Are a warning sound 24 Of impending doom, The lightning that goes Before the crack of thunder Swollen with Pride I see your head swollen with pride Like one who has not had a ride Of harsh and sour taste of life But had no strife to make a stride You stand out clear to give command To those you think are not renowned And have no right to reprimand Your orders that deserve a frown You skulk about like an old hawk Finding the chicks on whom to prey While Eagle-men sit on and gawk That you succeed is what they pray Those Eagle-men are full of gall They make your head swell so with pride They programme you to serve them all And thus no day will they you chide But don’t you see that it is strange That day by day they send you out To whip and sack and thus estrange Yourself from friends bent low by rout Why not allow those men to strive Looking around for greener fields ...
