MACAO’S GREETINGS British Consul Sends Congratulations KEPT THE FLAG FLOATING The British Consul-General, Mr. Reeves, has sent a letter to Lieut.Governor H.E. Mr. F. C. Gimson, expressing his feelings at the relief of Hongkong. He states: “After all this time my most sincere greetings and congratulations , both my own and all those under my charge, whether British subjects, Government servants or just ex-residents of Hongkong …… “If such a thing be possible could you convey our rejoicing in their freedom to Hongkong? We have felt very deeply for you in the last years and, in fact, you have never been out of thoughts. If you feel that we have done little to help you, please believe that it was not our fault. Circumstances very much beyond our control have been responsible. “It is, naturally, only by the mercy of Providence that we have been able to keep the British flag floating loyally here. I have felt very deeply the events in Hongkong of the last few days when your flag has gone up again. Our hearts are full as yours must be. “May our re-united family never again be divided and nothing again separate the communities in these neighbouring colonies.” ...
