206 Name Changes in Hong Kong and Neighboring Asia No claim is made that the list below is exhaustive, or that any term is more authentic than the other. The more commonly used term in Hong Kong English is listed first and other terms are listed after it. The following changes or variations are not included. (1) There was a massive mandated Hong Kong name change regime under Japanese rule. However, the names have not been used after the Second World War, so these names are not recorded here. (2) A number of organizations dropped the prefix “Royal” from their names at the time of the handover. These changes are also not being noted, since that is an accurate change of description, rather than a real name change. (3) Likewise, description changes are not included, for example: Hung Hom Bay to Hung Hom (the area). (4) Different romanization systems have created different spellings for Chinese words and place names. These orthographic differences cannot be considered changes and are also not included. Not in all cases do the changed names refer to exactly the same area as before. Some place names cover related, but larger or smaller areas. For example, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia used to be part of French Indochina, which in turn used 207 to be a Chinese vassal state.
