The genesis of this collection began in 2009 during Singapore’s annual pride season, IndigNation, when Audrey Yue and Jun Zubillaga-Pow met and talked about the possibility of putting together a book that captures the new energies and voices that are emerging in the nation-state. In 2010 Audrey and Jun, together with the contributors whom we have invited, coaxed and almost harassed (!) to write an essay for this collection, came together for a seminar to further workshop the proposed topics and conceptual frames. This book reflects the combined voices of these scholars and activists, including many others whose voices have been folded seamlessly into these pages. They continue to play key roles together in the fight for recognition of LGBT rights in Singapore. In particular, we would like to thank: Alex Au, Russell Heng and People Like Us for initiating the Rascals Prize that brought queer Singapore studies out into the open; Stuart Koe, Sylvia Tan and Fridae for making available their institutional knowledge and resources; Jack Yong and Shubankar Dam at the Singapore Management University for facilitating the workshop, and William Spurlin for additional commentaries during the workshop. Eileena Lee (RedQuEEn!) and Jean Chong (Sayoni) have also been queer comrades. The editors of the Queer Asia series—Chris Berry, Peter Jackson, Helen Hok-Sze Leung and John Erni—have been most supportive of the project from the beginning, for which we are grateful. Audrey’s work on queer Singapore has benefitted from the generosity of many colleagues, and she would like to thank, in particular, Meaghan Morris, Jacqueline Lo, Vicki Crowley and Kim So-young who have invited her to their conferences in Hong Kong, Canberra, Adelaide and Seoul, and provided most valuable feedback. Collaborations with Peter Jackson, Mark McLelland and Fran Martin on the AsiaPacifiQueer Network provided a foundational beginning that has also shaped the trajectory of this research.
