Acknowledgments This volume is the outcome of a conference held at the University of Washington inApril 2006. The conference was made possible by generous grants from the East Asia Center and the Institute for Transnational Studies at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and the Simpson Center for the Humanities at the University of Washington.
