However, they do give a reasonable picture of the situation as it developed over time. In particular it is apparent that many of the early cannon cast in Macau under the direction of Manuel Tavares Bocarro remained in service for a long time. These were replaced in the middle of the nineteenth century by new cast iron ones, which technically were a little more advanced. The first step towards more modern guns was the acquisition of the Armstrong and Blakely rifled muzzle loaders in about 1870. Even by 1899 there were relatively few RMLs and only one machine gun. Clearly things had to change and in the twentieth century quickfiring and breech-loading guns were purchased. Although there are many references to particular types of gun, there is no single list that provides a full inventory of what existed at any one time. The list for 1930 is therefore purely an amalgamation of data from various sources that details types but not numbers.
