The outline classification o f the Animal Kingdom presented here is much simplified sinc e certain groups of animals, for example the insects and many quadruped vertebrates, such as amphibians and mammals, are not well represented on the shore and in coastal waters. Classification i s only with the higher taxonomic categories of Phylum, Class and sometimes Sub-class. Th e species reported upon in this book, are however, assigned to their taxonomic categories so diat the reader can see at a glance which groups most readily form associations. Moreover , the species recorded are divided into host and symbiont to illustrate again which groups are included more commonly under each category. When writing the name of an animal, the binomial name, consisting of the genus and species, is given. B y convention, both word s are usually italicized and the generic name is given a capital first letter. Th e person who first described the species and in which year, follows the Latin name. Common names of the species are given in the text, where they exist.
