Contributors David Gardner is a Senior Language Instructor in the English Centre of the University of Hong Kong. He has taught EFL and ESP at secondary and tertiary levels in France, Saudi Arabia, England and now in Hong Kong. His main interests are the use of interactive video, video and computer -assisted learning in the learning of languages especially in self-access mode. Lindsay Miller is a University Lecturer in the English Department of City Polytechnic of Hong Kong. His main areas of research interest are in selfaccess language learning, English for science and technology and materials writing. He is co-editor with David Nunan of New Ways in Teaching Listening. Phil Benson teaches in the English Centre at the University of Hong Kong. He has also taught in Algeria, Kuwait, Seychelles, Malaysia and Japan. His research interests are in self-access, language and ideology and world Englishes. Richard Farmer is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of English, Hong Kong Polytechnic, where he is co-ordinator of the English Language Study-Centre. He has previously taught in England, Kuwait, Jordan and Somalia and has written textbooks for use in China. His main areas of interest include self-access language learning, learner independence and teacher training. Lynne Flowerdew teaches EAP and business and technical communication skills courses in the Language Centre of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Her areas of interest include CALL for selfaccess use, concordanced-based materials writing and corpus linguistics. She is co-editor of Entering Text, the conference proceedings of a seminar on corpus linguistics and lexicography at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Julie Forrester has been teaching EFL for the British Council for eight years, first in Oman and now in Hong Kong. Her current interests are teacher training, reading strategies and materials writing for self-access in secondary schools. xvi Contnbutors Kathy Hayward is a Lecturer in the English Language Teaching Unit of the Chinese University of Hong Kong where she has set up and directs a writing centre within the Independent Learning Centre. Her main areas of research interest are computer-mediated communication, collaborative learning networks and computer-assisted language learning in the self-access mode. Elaine Martyn is a Language Instructor at the English Centre of the University of Hong Kong. She has been teaching EFL for ten years at secondary and tertiary levels in Nigeria, Pakistan, the People's Republic of China and now in Hong Kong. Her current research interests are in the implementation of self-access learning and spoken dIscourse analysis. Deirdre Moynihan Tong is an English Language Instructor in the English Language Study-Centre of Hong Kong Polytechnic. She has been teaching EFL and ESP in Hong Kong for six years. Her main areas of interest are learner independence, learner training, learner strategies, self-access materials development and English for business. Winnie W.F. Or teaches EAP and Technical Communication courses in the Language Centre of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology . She is involved in the development of the self-access centre.
