Preface฀ Promoting the quality of teaching and learning is a major concern of the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong. In 1998 and 2001, the UGC supported major conferences on this theme. This volume results from th e second o f these events , which focuse d o n the scholarship o f teaching an d learning . Th e conferenc e plannin g committe e brough t together members from all UGC-subvented institutions. The University of Hong Kong provided the chair and secretariat . Before callin g fo r papers , the committee identified a s a focus fo r reflection, an d a s the title of the conference, th e work of the Carnegi e Foundation o n The Scholarship ofJeaching and Learning (Boye r 1989) . Important an d stimulatin g contribution s b y loca l an d internationa l scholars were presented in plenary sessions. Five sets of parallel sessions provided a framework fo r presentation on a variety of topics by teachers and their collaborators in UGC-subvented institutions. These institutions also organized exhibits about their own work, within design parameters provided by the conferenc e secretariat . The conference attracte d ove r 300 teachers from highe r education institutions and concluded with a fruitful dialogu e with tertiary students. The present volum e result s fro m a decision t o appoint a tea m o f editors to produce a volume of selected papers that reflect the perspectives of higher education teachers in Hong Kong. It contains revised versions of about one in five of the papers presented at the conference. All papers published her e wen t throug h multipl e blin d reviews . Th e themati c division fo r the book i s based o n editorial identification o f the majo r thrusts in the papers. In one form or another, all of the papers share a common focu s o n th e impact o f scholarship o f teaching on learning . They demonstrate a community-wide acceptance of this trend as part of the continual proces s i n developing learnin g environment s i n highe r education.
