GENERAL This case study present s anothe r projec t tha t exploit s environmental technique s t o construc t a n energ y efficient building . Sit e planning an d massin g ar e th e initial step s t o conside r fo r savin g energy . Thus , th e buildings ar e planned wit h th e short side s facing eas t and west . Machiner y room s ar e placed o n position s with stron g sun . Thi s reflect s th e plannin g fo r environmental control . The roof i s an area with muc h solar exposure. In this project, landscape planting, water features an d covered walkways are placed on the rooftop formin g usabl e amenitie s a s well a s an insulatin g layer. LOCATION The sit e is a six-hectare sit e on Tsing Yi Island. It is a rather rura l sit e with a hill as its backdrop. A highway lies o n on e sid e an d a high-ris e residentia l estat e i s nearby. The project takes advantage of natural resources and aims to capture the summer sea breeze by elevating the south side of the main building to facilitate natura l ventilation. ENCLOSURE To limit th e effec t o f th e absorbe d sola r hea t o n th e interior, deep recessed facade s an d sunshadin g fin s ar e techniques used in the elevations' window design. Some windows are openable to allow natural ventilation when possible. Th e reinforce d concret e externa l wall s ar e covered with reflective metallic tiles to reduce solar heat gain. Windows ar e constructed o f a grey tinte d glas s which absorbs some heat, thus reducing solar heat gain to the interior . COMMENTS This project uses simple means but careful planning and design t o achiev e a n energ y efficien t building . Th e overall therma l transfe r valu e i s o f 10.2 7 w/m 2 performance, compare d wit h genera l curtai n wal l buildings of 80 w/m2 .
