Plate 16.1 View of the wave roo f unde r construction . THE NEW KCRC STATION Architectural Firm: Foster Asia (Hong Kong) Ltd. GENERAL This is a case study of the extension of the existing Hung Horn terminu s o f th e Kowloo n an d Canto n Railway , which take s th e for m o f a simpl e rectangula r glas s pavilion that gives lightness and openness . LOCATION This sit e is on th e roo f dec k o f th e railwa y station ; a lightweight pavilio n structur e o f stee l an d glas s i s therefore a suitable solution. The pavilion is supported by steel columns that distribute the structural load to a steel raft o n the existing deck . ENCLOSURE The enclosure aims to create a spacious, generous an d well-lit interio r b y means o f simplicit y o f layout . Th e rectangular layou t i s denoted b y peripheral column s supporting stee l torsion 'spire ' beams which then hol d the steel wave beams with profile d meta l decking . The wave roof i s used t o incorporat e skylight s a s natural lighting . By using full-height glas s walls, much energy require d fo r lightin g ca n b e reduced . T o supplement the skylight, artificial lights are incorporated to contro l th e ligh t intensit y insid e the pavilion . Th e wave roof also forms deep eaves to shade excessive solar heat from th e pavilion . The steel wave roof i s finished wit h metal deckin g and dense rigid mineral wool for insulation. The uppe r surface is finished with PVC waterproof membrane . The ceiling i s constructed o f perforate d stee l infil l panel s and eave s completed wit h aluminium panels . The glas s wall s ar e independen t o f th e pavilio n structure and stand on a structural grid of 3 m with a n infill pane l module o f 3 m x 1.2 2 m . Clear toughene d glass is used. COMMENTS A simple , ope n desig n i s alway s effectiv e fo r larg e buildings intende d fo r movemen t o f people .
