1 1 THE YEARS BEFORE THE PACIFIC WAR TounderstandwhytherewereandstillareChineseschoolsintheMalay Peninsula,weneedtoknowhowthelandbecameaBritishdependency betweentheeighteenthandtwentiethcenturiesfortherewerefewChinese livingtherebeforetheBritisharrivedandevenfewerChineseschools worthnoting.TheChinesefollowedinthewakeoftheBritish,arrivingto seekabetterlivingwhichtheBritishcouldprovide.TheBritishinitiated vasteconomicdevelopmentswhichnecessitatedextensiveutilizationof manpower.InadditiontotheattractivenessofthelandunderBritishrule, China,fromwheretheChinesecame,wasravagedbywarswithforeign powersaswellascivilconflictsfromaboutthemiddleofthenineteenth century,whichmadelifeverydifficultforordinarypeople. ThefirstChinesetocometotheMalayPeninsulaactuallyarrived inthefifteenthcenturyduringthedaysoftheMalaccasultanate,but theywereinsignificantinnumberscomparedwiththosearrivinglater. FrancisLightandStamfordRafflessetuptradingstationsinPenangand Singaporein1786and1819respectively,andthesestationsbecamegreat magnetsforChinesetradersaswellaslabourers.In1826,theBritishalso acquiredMalaccafromtheDutchanduseditfortrading.Thisformer sultanatehadfallentoPortugueseruleinthefifteenthcenturyandthen totheDutch.Penang,Singapore,andMalaccawerethenformedintoone administrativeunitnamedtheStraitsSettlements.Then,beginningfrom 1874,theBritishmovednorthwardsfromSingaporeintothehinterland, 01CSPM'sia.indd1 12/28/1010:17:26AM 2 Chinese Schools in Peninsular Malaysia tothestatesofPerak,Selangor,NegeriSembilanandPahangwhichthey formedintoafederationcalledtheFederatedMalayStatesin1896.The metal,tin,wasfoundtobeabundantinPerakandSelangor,andthiswas whatdrewtheBritishnorthwards.In1909,theBritishandtheThais reachedanagreementtodividebetweenthemselvessomeMalaystates straddlingthepresentborderbetweenthepeninsulaandThailand,andso theBritishalsotookoverKedah,Perlis,KelantanandTrengganu.Later, anotherstatejustnorthofSingapore,Johor,wasalsoacquired.Allthese lateracquisitionsbecamecollectivelyknownastheUnfederatedMalay States.Bythattime,theMalayPeninsulahadcometobeknownasaland especiallysuitableforthecultivationofrubber.Thus,bytheearlyyears ofthetwentiethcentury,thewholepeninsulahadbeentakenoverby theBritish. Penang,Singapore,andMalaccaattractedChineseimmigrantsbecause oftrade.Therestofthepeninsulabecameinterestingtothembecauseof tinandrubber.Drawnbytheseattractionsandpushedbythedifficulties oflifeinChina,theyemigratedtotheMalayPeninsulainevergreater numbersaftertheBritishmovedintothemainland. Alongwiththeir arrivalwastheestablishmentofeducationfortheirchildren. Table1.1showstheinfluxofChineseimmigrantsintotheMalay Peninsulafrom1871to1941,andthepercentageoftheseimmigrantsof thetotalpopulationinthecountryoverthoseyears.
