669 35 INDIANS IN THAILAND Srisurang Poolthupya INTRODUCTION ThailandandIndiahavebeenincontacteconomically,sociallyandculturally sincetheearlyformationoftheThaiKingdomofSukhothaiinthe13th CenturyA.D.ThesimilaritybetweenThaiscriptandsomeSouthIndian scripts,thebeliefinBuddhism,Indianwordsandplacenameswhichtell ofeconomic,socialandculturalcontactsaresomeoftheevidencesofthe closelinksbetweenpeoplesofthetwocountries.However,thediplomatic relationsbetweenThailandandIndiaonlybeganin1947whenIndiabecame independent.Intheyear2007,thetwocountriescelebratedthesixtieth anniversaryofIndo-Thaidiplomaticrelations. SinceIndiahasbegunitsLookEastpolicythatseekstointensify diplomaticandeconomictieswithcountriesofSoutheastAsiagrouped togetherasASEAN,therehavebeenincreasinginter-linkagesbetween ThailandandIndia.Naturally,IndiansinThailandenjoythebenefitsof thisnewpolicythatbeganfromthe1990s.Exchangeofvisitsoftheprime ministersofthetwocountriesaswellastheroyalvisitsofH.R.H.Prince Vajiralongkorn,CrownPrinceofThailand,H.R.H.PrincessMahaChakri Sirindhorn,andH.R.H.PrincessChulabhornhavecreatedinterestinThailand amongIndians.Thailand,therefore,hasbecomeanattractivedestinationfor Indiantouristsandbusinessmen.ThaiAirwaysInternationalaswellasAir IndiaandIndianAirlinesjoinintofacilitatebothIndianandThaitravellers goingtoandfrombothcountriesbyincreasingdirectflightstoallmajor 35RisingIndia.indd669 8/29/0810:22:35AM 670 Srisurang Poolthupya citiesofIndia:NewDelhi,Mumbai,Chennai,Bangalore,Kolkata,Bodhgaya, GuwahatiandHyderabad.IncreasingIndia–Thailandbilateraltradeespecially fromyear2000onwardshavebroughtmoreprosperitytobothIndiaand Thailand.IndianbusinessmeninThailandwhoareusuallyactiveinthisintertrade benefitconsiderablyfromtheabovecircumstances.Moreover,thefirst BIMSTEC1 SummitinBangkokinJuly2004whichincludessomeSouth AsianandASEANcountriesboostedthetradebetweenIndiaandThailand aswellasASEANcountriesingeneral.TheFreeTradeAgreement(FTA) betweenThailandandIndiaalsopromotestrade. THE TERM ‘INDIANS’ AND THE NUMBER OF INDIANS IN THAILAND Theterm“Indians”hereincludesallpeoplefromtheIndiansub-continentwho mayretaintheirnationalitiesasIndian,Pakistani,BangladeshiorNepalese asthecasemaybeandalsothosewhohavebecomeThaicitizens.Theymay alsobecategorizedbyreligionasHindus,Muslims,Sikhsorbytheplaceof theiroriginsuchasPunjabis,Marwaris(fromRajasthan),Sindhis,Tamils, Bengalis,Pathans(AfghanistanandnorthPakistan),Nepalese.Atsomepoints, thecategorieswilloverlap.Forexample,manyPunjabisareSikhsbutsome PunjabisareHinduswhiletherearemanyBengaliHindusoriginallyfrom India,BengaliMuslimsmostlyfromBangladesh,andalsoBengaliBuddhists mainlyfromBangladesh.Thischapterwilltrytoclarifyifnecessary.Most IndiansareresidinganddoingbusinessinBangkok.Onlyafewarefoundin othermajorcitiesinThailandsuchasChiangMai,Phuket,Songkhla. TheestimateofIndiansinThailandisbasedonthefactthatintheyear 2007census,thewholepopulationofThailandwas63,038,247.Ofthese 75percentwereethnicThais,14percentChineseandtheIndianethnic groupwasincludedinthe11percentof“Others”.These11percentcanbe Indians,Malays,Myanmese,Caucasians,andothers.TheIndiancommunity inThailandestimatesitself,bothbynationalityandbyorigin,asalmost 200,000altogether.TheactualnumberofIndiancitizensinThailandmay fluctuatebetween20,000and30,000,includingIndianswhogetinto Thailandillegally.
