Shantakumar and Pundarik Mukhopadhaya DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY SoutheastAsiahaswitnessedmigrationsfromtheIndiansub-continentand China,andisculturallyinfluencedbyHindu,Buddhist,Taoist,andIslamic doctrines,ideologies,art,religionandphilosophyofbothregions.Malaysia andSingaporecontainpockets(minorities)ofIndiandiasporawhosediverse raceswouldbedirectlyclassifiedasIndians(SandhuandMani1993). SingaporehasasignificantIndianminority(8.7percentofresident population,2005);Chinese(75.6percent),Malays(13.6percent),andother minoritiesmakeuptherest.Thepopulationcompositionisademographic “laboratory”(Table30.1).Ethnicityandlanguagegroupsareenumeratedin thenationalcensusesandsurveysinSingapore.Indianscontinuetopractise theiruniqueculturewithinaconstitutionalframework(Tamilisamongthe fourrecognizedofficiallanguages).
