1 1 Introduction Thank you very much, Mr Chairman. I am very pleased to be here at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Thank you very much for your kind invitation to our candidate, His Excellency President Michelle Bachelet. It is the first time in our history that we have elected a woman as President of the Republic. She is the fourth President in a row belonging to the same coalition that has ruled Chile ever since we recovered democracy in 1989. This is the Party called the “Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia”. Please allow me to share some thoughts with this very distinguished audience. Now, the topic is quite broad: “Chile and Latin America in a Globalized World”.
