TheContributors BAE Geung-Chan is Professor, Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS), Korea. He received his Ph.D. in Government from the Claremont Graduate School in 1988. His major research interests are ASEAN and Southeast Asian Affairs, and Regional Co-operation in East Asia. His published works in recent years include “Key Task for East Asian Regional Cooperation”, “Challenges and Tasks Facing ROK-China-Japan Tripartite Cooperation: View from Recent Historical Controversies and Nationalism ”, “Northeast Asian Cooperation Initiative and Korea’s Diplomatic Tasks: A Strategy for Regional Cooperation”, and “Prospects for the East Asian Summit”. Kang CHOI is Professor, Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS), Korea. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Ohio State University in 1991, M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985, and B.A. from Kyunghee University in 1983. His published works include “An Approach toward a Common Form of Defense White Paper”, “International Arms Control and Inter-Korean Arms Control”, “Inter-Korean Arms Control and Implications for the USFK”, “Future ROK-US Security Alliance”, “A New Approach toward Inter-Korean Arms Control”, and “North Korea’s Intentions and Strategies on Nuclear Game”. HAN Tae-kyu is the Chancellor, Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS), Korea. He previously served as Ambassador to Greece and Bangladesh. HERNANDEZ, Carolina G. is Professor of Political Science at the University of the Philippines. Her latest edited volumes are (with Gill Wilkins) Population, Food, Energy and the Environment (a CAEC publication for the 2000 Seoul ASEM Summit), and a trilogy (on Environment, People, and Globalization) with David Dewitt entitled Development and Security in Southeast Asia (Ashgate, 2003). KAMARULNIZAM Abdullah is Associate Professor at the Strategic and International Relations Programme, School of History, Politics, and Strategic Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University Kebangsaan Malaysia. He obtained his Ph.D. in Politics from Lancaster University, United Kingdom. His main research interests are political violence, religious militancy, and national security issues that are pertinent to Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. His latest publication is “Islamic Militancy in Malaysia” in The Making of Ethnic and Religious Conflict in Southeast Asia: Cases and Resolutions, edited by Lambang Trijuno. Yogyakarta: Centre for Security and Peace Studies, Gadjah Mada University, 2004. K. KESAVAPANY is Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore. Prior to this, he was Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia from 1997 to 2002. He also served as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and concurrently accredited as Ambassador to Italy and Turkey. He was elected as the first Chairman of the General Council of the World Trade Organization (WTO) when it was established in January 1995. He graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and obtained a Master of Arts degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Yul KWON is a research fellow at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) in Seoul, Korea. He is currently Head of Research Division in charge of Southeast and South Asian Studies. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Sogang University in Seoul, focusing on development economics and international economics. He has published several journal articles and books, including A Study on the Poverty Reduction Strategy of Southeast Asian Countries (2004), East Asian Regionalism Focusing on ASEAN Plus Three (2004), and ASEAN’s Economic Integration: Recent Development and Policy Implications (2003).
