1 Introduction The first attempt at producing a bibliography of the demography of Singapore was one which covered the Malaysian region including Singapore entitled The Demography of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei: A Bibliography by Saw Swee-Hock (39 pp.). This bibliography, containing some 349 titles, was published by the Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong, in January 1970. In preparing the present updated version to take into account the numerous works published since then, I have decided to produce one bibliography to cover Malaysia, Bibliography of Malaysian Demography, with 1,379 titles, published in 2005 by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, and another to cover Singapore in view of the present tendency for writers to treat these two regions separately. This way researchers interested in only one region need not acquire a combined publication. Looking ahead one could see the added advantage in that a revised edition of the two bibliographies could be prepared at different dates in the future to take into account the likely differential developments in the two regions. In compiling the 1,165 titles included in this bibliography of Singapore reference was made, apart from Saw’s original work, to numerous bibliographies among which the more important were: 1. Books and periodicals were consulted in these places. In a few instances where a publication could not be traced, inclusion was based on the title. The scope of this bibliography is restricted to published works in the English language in the form of books, booklets, monographs, reports, articles and ordinances. To facilitate finding, the publications are classified first into twenty sections according to subject matter, and within each section the entries are arranged in alphabetic sequence by author, with further grouping in order of the year of publication in...
