Author’s Note The first two chapters and the fifth are revised versions of my Yu Ying-shih Lectures in Hong Kong and one that I gave at George Washington University . Chapter three is a revised version of an essay I dedicated to Alice Tay that was first published as “China’s Long Road to Sovereignty” in G. Doeker-Mach and K.A. Ziegert (eds.) Law and Legal Culture in 2004. The fourth, on revolution , is based on a public lecture I gave for the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore in 2010. I have also included as an appendix an essay on some ideas of tianxia (All Under Heaven) seen from outside China during a period of transition; that was based on the Inaugural Tsai Lecture that I gave at Harvard University in 2006. ...
