 xiii THE SCOPE OF THIS BOOK This book is not intended to be a complete gardening manual. There already exists a plethora of gardening texts with detailed information of every aspect of gardening for the beginner as well as the expert. Almost all of these books are published abroad so the information that is correct for Europe or Australia may not apply here. What I hope to provide instead, is information you do not readily find in these books—information specifically for Hong Kong gardeners to succeed in our local conditions. Advice is given that you can actually use, anticipating your questions of what, when, how—what plants to select, when to plant, how to manage a particular problem. Nevertheless, some basic principles and general topics of interest are included for a better understanding of growing your own food in Hong Kong. I adhere strictly to the principle that only plants that I have personally grown are featured in this book. Since I cannot possibly have grown everything, there are gaps that might disappoint some readers who may find some of their favourites missing. With the exception of a few photographs of wild plants in their natural habitat, all the photographs were taken in my garden, and all (except for two) were taken by me. ...
