THE GENESIS OF THE EXEMPLARS REPRESENTED BY A DIAGRAM A stemma codicum for the portion of Henry’s Summa may be constructed based upon the study of the explicit pecia indications of the first and second university exemplars as well as upon the general test collation of all the manuscripts concerned with this portion of the Summa. However, medieval manuscripts were human hand-made productions with a history.1 These manuscripts were frequently corrected, sometimes for sense, but at other times they were corrected against a manuscript that may have been “higher” on the stemma. Thus, the stemma, constructed to indicate the genesis of the exemplars, must be understood to be a qualified visual aid. All of the manuscripts used to form the present volume are noted in the critical apparatus of the text and have been completely collated. This collation is also used in constructing the stemma.
