THE SECOND PARISIAN EXEMPLAR Two manuscripts, PADUA, Biblioteca Capitolare, ms. C.45 (=P’) and ZWIJ­ NAARDE (Gent), Comtesse Goethals de Mude (=K’), make it possible to reconstruct the second Parisian university exemplar for the section of Henry’s Summa edited in this volume. The high number of common readings along with a significant coincidence of pecia transitions for the section of the Summa edited in the present volume1 clearly indicate that the two manuscripts were copied from the same exemplar. The second exemplar introduces a number of changes that differentiate it from the first Parisian exemplar. For example, the test collation discovered that the second Parisian exemplar agreed a total of five times with manuscript A and three times with manuscript A and manuscript T’ when all the other manuscripts had variants for a given reading. While not all of these readings resulted in a superior reading for the critical text, they do show that K’ and P’ operate independently of the other manuscripts on at least five occasions and affiliate with manuscript A.There also exists a total of sixteen isolated homoeoteleuta in the second exemplar.There are also a number of omissions, additions, and inversions in the second exemplar as well as some variants. The high number of homoeoteleuta found in the second exemplar suggest that the first Parisian exemplar was not the direct model upon which the second exemplar was based. There is not enough evidence available to determine what the actual model for the second exemplar was, other than one that differs from the first exemplar as it has been reconstructed from the existing manuscripts. Since the text of the second Parisian exemplar was often used for copies of Henry’s Summa from the fourteenth century on until the appearance of printed editions it remains a valuable historical resource for understanding the reception of Henry’s work and should thus be included in the critical edition. 1 Cf. supra, p.
