Islands were places ‘on the other side’: different, remote, savage, mysterious and marvellous. They were sites of extra-ordinary events and happenings. The eleven contributions in this book cluster around the concept of island taking the following perspectives: • the search for undiscovered and paradise islands in literature and cartography • the qualities of islands in literary evidence • the idea of fictional islands in Old Norse texts • the seasonal ‘islandization’ of certain lands • monasteries as islands and monasteries on islands • the human body as an island of religious achievements. The authors are international specialists who research the margins of the medieval world.
