C. Creelman,directeur des Women's Instituiez During Creelman's term, from 1899 to 1904, inquiries were pouring in from ail over thé Province, "about how to establish a WI Group as thé one in Stoney Creek."In answer to thèse anxiouspotential members, Creelman decided to issue thé first formai set of instructions on how to organize a Women's Institute. Dated June 1900, this letter outlined thé rationale behind thé movement, declaring "What Farmer's Institutes hâve donc for thé farmers and thé farms, Women's Institutes can do for thé homes through thé instrumentality of wives and daughters." Promising a grant of $10 per year to help with holding meetings, thé letter went on to advise: The rules and régulations are very simple. The following are thé most important: The organization meeting may be called by Superintendent of thé Farmers' Institutes, by thé head of a municipality, by thé Président and Secretary of thé local Farmer's Institute or by five ladies of thé district. Each Women's Institute shall be in affiliation with thé Farmers' Institutes in that district. 83 AU FIL DES ANS The object of thé Women's Institute shall be thé dissémination of knowledge relating to domestic economy, to home sanitation; a better understanding of thé économie and hygienic value of foods, clothing and fuel, and a more scientific care and training of children with a view to raising thé général standing of thé health and morals of our people. Each Women's Institute shall receive a grant of $10 annually from thé Department, on condition that an equal sum be granted by thé council or municipality in which thé institute is organized or from thé local farmer's institute, and on such further conditions as are imposed by thé "Act and rules" governing Farmers' Institutes. After your institute has been organized and has elected officers, a date will be set for thé next meeting. An organization that will enable each lady in thé neighbourhood to get ail such information in a practical and systematic form cannot fail to assist in thé général upbuilding and improving of women's work on thé farm. Some districts hâve already organized and twelve others hâve signified their intention of doing so during thé coming season. We hâve a number of estimable lady delegates on our staff and their services may be secured at any time to assist any proposed institute in organizing or in carrying out any practical schemes of organization.
