Acknowledgments The essays presented here were first written for a School of American Research advanced seminar called “Anthropology and Contemporary Immigration,” which was held in October 2001. I would like to thank the seminar participants for their essays and engaging discussions, as well as for their responsiveness and commitment to the project throughout the rewriting and publishing process. My thanks, as well, to Josh DeWind, who as a discussant brought to the seminar insights from his work in anthropology and his role as director of the International Migration Program at the Social Science Research Council.
