The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is a German political foundation that was established in 1925. The oldest political foundation in Germany, its backbone is the promotion of the ideas and values of social democracy across the world. It carries out its mission through its programmes of civic education, research, the strengthening of democratic institutions and support of programmes that promote social justice. The FES has worked in Zimbabwe since the country’s independence in 1980. Its main work has been in cooperating with trade unions, encouraging initiatives in democratic reform and promoting public debate on social, economic and political issues. The foundation’s support for the publication of this book emanates from its paralegal training programme with the trade unions under the auspices of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions. The book started as an Introduction to Law for Trade Unionists. From this, its author, Dr Lovemore Madhuku, who is both a University lecturer and an FES consultant , was able to produce a book suitable for both paralegal training and university studies. The FES sees this book as a great asset in legal education in Zimbabwe and is therefore proud to support its publication. It is hoped that this book will play a role in the development of Zimbabwe by being useful to law students, lawyers, paralegal trainees and the general public.
