Foreword I ntherealmsofcollectinganddocumentingTexana, certainnamesloomlarge:Raines,Streeter,Winkler,and Friendcomeimmediatelytomind.LarryJonesbelongsinthis companyaswell,eventhoughhehasdepartedsomewhatfrom hisdistinguishedpredecessorsbyconcentratinghiseffortsnot onbooksandpamphletsandbroadsides,butonanotherimportant physicalobject,thephotograph.Textswillalwaysbeessential inhelpingustounderstandthepast,butimagesprovideuswith anotherwaytoseeandinterprethistoricalevents.TheJones CollectionofearlyTexasphotography,whichnowresides,weare happytosay,attheDeGolyerLibraryatSouthernMethodist University,iswithoutpeerintermsofdepth,breadth,andquality. Anadditionalbenefit asthesepagesattest,isthatLarry’scollection isinformedthroughoutbyhisdiscerningeyeandhisquest tounderstandthesephotographsintheirhistoricalcontext.For Jones,amassingthecollectionwenthandinhandwithinterpreting thephotographs,finding elationshipsandlinkages.Inthis regard,muchofLarry’sworkispioneering:hehaspursuedthe storyofearlyTexasphotographyhimselfwithoriginalresearch andpointedthewayforotherstofollow.Itisarichlegacy,andall Texansowehimagreatdebt. Manyoftheimagesareiconic:theAlamoandthestatecapitol, CynthiaAnnParker,andSamHouston.Butformeand,Isuspect formanyothersaswell,itisthelesswell-knownimagethatcaptures theimagination.IntheJonescollectiononeconfrontsTexas andTexansfromallwalksoflife:richandpoor;black,white,red, andbrown;maleandfemale;adultsandchildren;smalltownsand developingcities;farmsandlandscapes;businessesandindustries; andevenanimals—includingacatposedwithaserape!
