Dr. Thurston, quite thorough , laid out a plan to strategically capture as many facts as possible, and this publication is scheduled to coincide with the th anniversary of the founding of St. Philip’s College and to serve as the first edition in a series of publications contributing to the history of the region through Texas A&M University–San Antonio. Thanks to Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, founding president of Texas A&M University–San Antonio, for making this possible. Since , from our original home in La Villita to our current location, St. Philip’s College is truly an institution that has been embraced by its community. Our existence evolved from a desire to ensure that young black girls coming out of slavery attained both marketable skills as seamstresses and leadership skills, to the present day, as we remain committed to our mission as an open-door institution that provides educational opportunity for the academically talented and the academically challenged. Our graduates and attendees have attained phenomenal accomplishments throughout San Antonio, the state of Texas, the United States, and internationally. As we journey toward our next century of service to the community, service to our business and education partners, and service to mankind, we will maintain our original ethos of preparing all who come through our doors with marketable skills and leadership skills. Many thanks to Dr. Marie Thurston, and I am grateful for my leadership assignment in this journey. This oral history of St. Philip’s College represents a labor of love, dedication, commitment, and a true desire to acknowledge the journey of this learning institution on the Eastside of San Antonio. Through the more than  years of educating all who came, St. Philip’s College has stood as a beacon for hope, progress, change, transition, promise, and goal accomplishment. Dr. Marie Thurston has led this history-chronicling project from its inception . The selection of Dr. Thurston represents the most appropriate choice of individuals. She has steadfastly given of herself to ensure that St. Philip’s College has its own history, as seen through the eyes of its many passengers along for the journey. Dr. Thurston was exactly the correct choice for this assignment recognizing her academic prowess and most importantly, her abiding faith. She is a woman of deep religious convictions, which have guided her life’s journey. Her attributes of faith and religious convictions principally align her with the founding roots of St. Philip’s College, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Bishop James Steptoe Johnston, and the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Dr. Thurston has diligently sought to engage active and past contributors to the history of St. Philip’s College by conducting thousands of hours of interviews and conversations . Although she was originally engaged by Dr. Angie Runnels, it was an easy decision to continue her efforts once we met and I understood and felt her passion for this assignment.
