COMPARATIVE TABLE OF SUBJECTS IN JAMES FITZJAMES STEPHEN'S LIBERTY, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY AND JOHN STUART MILL'S ON LIBERTY We offer this table of subjects comparing Stephen's Liberty, Equality, Fraternity with Mill's On Liberty so readers can more easily examine the alternative understandings of liberty and other related moral and political matters found in these two works. Such an examination may also provide a vehicle for reassessing Stephen's place in the history of nineteenth century political thought and the history of liberty. On some subjects, for example, utilitarianism and marriage, the reader will find more extensive discussions in Mill's Utilitarianism and The Sub;ection ofWomen; however, we have limited our comparison to On Liberty. Nor does this table include other subject-themes that are important to Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, such as "the Religion of Humanity," when they are not central to On Liberty. We have tended to choose Mill's idiom rather than Stephen's for the names of the subjects. Insofar as an examination of liberty is ubiquitous throughout the two works, especially On Liberty, we did not think it necessary to have a separate entry for "liberty."
