Empire_151-176.indd 176 7/9/11 10:25 PM A NoTE ON THE TYPE The typeface used in this book is Adobe Caslon, a modern interpretation of the classic faces cut in the IJ20S by the English typographer William Caslon (169z-q66). Caslon was trained as an engraver but turned increasingly to type design and cutting, setting up his own type foundry in qzo. Caslon's design became the first major native English typeface to achieve wide popularity. It displays the small lowercase height and the relatively restrained contrast typical ofwhat are now called "old style" fonts. Modern taste and technology have smoothed out many ofthe idiosyncrasies ofWilliam Caslon's original cutting, but the modern version retains some of the warmth and much of the straightforward honesty that have made Caslon a good and dependable friend of the typographer for more than 250 years.
