This book is set in Caslon 540, a modern typeface based on the famous fonts of the engraver and type founder William Caslon (1692–1766). The earlier legal restrictions on English printers had made them dependent on Dutch sources for types well into the eighteenth century. Caslon naturally modeled his designs on the Dutch forms, introducing his own improvements in fit and proportion. So many variations on Caslon’s originals have been produced since his time, combining tradition with individuality, that it is difficult to classify Caslon as an old-style or transitional typeface.
