CHECKLIST OF RALPH ADAMS CRAM'S JOB BOOKS CA.1900-1940 BY ANN MINER DANIEL [These no longer extant bound volumes were a record of drawings made by the Boston office of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson and thereafter Cram and Ferguson. The entries gave the date, type of drawing (plan, elevation, section) or what the drawing shows (tracery, screen, and so on), the initials of the person by whom the drawing was made, to whom the drawings were sent, and when and if returned. The entries were made by office boys. Organized by city and then by building, these job books, because the entries were for drawings, do not document if a buildingwas built. However, if an entry for a building continued for several pages progressing from a plot plan and usually several schemes of plans, elevations, and sections to specific drawings for altar furniture, candlesticks, and memorial tablets, the assumption has been made that this building exists and was designed by Cram. Roman numeral I of the checklist itemizes these; Roman numeral II is composed of those churches or chapels to which the firm made some addition or alteration. In some cases the addition or alteration was as major as a new parish house, rectory, or a new chancel; in other cases it involved only the design for one stained glass window or a baptismal font. The third division of the checklist includes entries from both categories, but because of the brevity of the entry in the job books it is likely these designs were either never built or, at least, not by Cram's firm. The dates given with each listingare the dates of the drawings prepared during Cram's lifetime. This checklist was compiled in 1978 by Ann Miner Daniel as part of her doctoral thesis on Cram's early churches. Because it includes only church work, it is not complete. But Albert Tanner of the Pittsburgh History and Landmark Foundation reports that those persons who now own the name Cram and Ferguson (andsuch records as were not given to the Boston Public Library) have destroyed all but one of these priceless volumes (which the Library has long sought).
