vii PREFACE Of Mind and Matter analyzes national identity along the German-Danish border. The study strives to add new angles to the literature on national identity in border areas and to fill a conspicuous gap in English-language historiography, which includes very few contemporary analyses of this region. I hope that the book will be able to satisfy its two foremost audiences. On the one hand, it is directed at readers with an interest in German and Scandinavian history. On the other, it wants to attract readers with an interest in nationalism, borderlands, and cultural diversity. By applying a comparative and transnational approach and anchoring the analysis in a theoretical framework, the study also tries to make a small contribution to the debate about the nature of history. During my work on this study, I have profited from the help of many. The libraries at the University of Southern Denmark fulfilled my never-ending requests for additional materials. The Danish national archives in Copenhagen and the regional archives in Aabenraa and Schleswig supplied most of the primary sources. Last, but by no means least, the insightful comments by Hans Schultz Hansen, Frank Lubowitz, Kurt Goblirsch, Tina Thaler, Gary Cohen as well as the editors and referees at Purdue University Press improved the study in content and style.
